Telford & Wrekin Council to submit White Ribbon Town application
Telford & Wrekin Council will mark White Ribbon Day 2013 by raising awareness of domestic abuse among young people.

White Ribbon Day sees men - including those in high profile public positions wearing – wearing a symbolic white ribbon to demonstrate the domestic abuse is not acceptable and should not be tolerated.
Telford & Wrekin Council is specifically raising awareness of domestic abuse among 16-18 year olds this year after the Government changed the definition of domestic abuse earlier this year to include that age group.
The council’s Community Safety Team will be going to New College and TCAT on Monday to collect pledges for the White Ribbon campaign, distribute wristbands and ribbons and raise awareness of the support, advice and guidance that is available in tackling community safety issues.
The new definition demonstrates that 16-18 year olds relationships are taken seriously and that the domestic abuse is recognised.
The Community Safety team will follow up White Ribbon Day by supporting the Women’s Aid campaign of 16 days of action.
Telford & Wrekin Council leader Councillor Kuldip Sahota said: “We are on the brink of submitting our application to become a White Ribbon Town and this is very much something that we are committed to.
“The change in the definition of domestic abuse is a significant one and means there is a younger age group to engage with and to ensure that they are aware they can also be victims.
“The Women’s Aid campaign that follows White Ribbon Day will see us working with partners and local sporting events to raise awareness and gain pledges prior to the application going in.”
