Heavy rain and strong winds are threatening to disrupt travel and shopping trips today.

A Yellow Warning for heavy rain was issued by the Met Office lasting until around 9am tomorrow.

Very strong south to southwesterly winds will accompany the rain, especially in exposed areas where gales or severe gales are likely.

Tomorrow will see sunny spells and scattered showers, locally heavy and wintry, mainly over higher ground. It will remain very windy and cold. A high of 7C is expected tomorrow.

Christmas Day is forecast to be colder but less wet, reaching a high of 6C.

Motorists across the region are being urged to take care and exercise caution when out and about on the roads over the next few days.

Anna Higgins from the Safer Roads Partnership said: “We are urging all motorists to exercise caution in adverse weather conditions, use common sense and follow our simple advice. All motorists should adjust their driving in bad weather and it’s even more important to give other drivers plenty of room. Strong winds will be affecting all vehicles on the road and heavy rain will increase stopping distances."

Arriva Trains Wales said all their services were operating as normal at 9.30am.

Services between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International are expected to be affected by a speed restriction after 1900 this evening, meaning trains may be delayed by up to 10 minutes in both directions

Passengers are advised to check their journeys before travelling by visiting www.journeycheck.com/arrivatrainswales for up to date service information.

The London Midland website advised passengers to start and finish their journey by mid-afternoon - http://www.journeycheck.com/londonmidland.
