Motorists ignoring road closure signs on the A464 near Shifnal are putting lives at risk, police warned today.

Motorists ignore road closure signs near Shifnal

The road was closed at Upton crossroads on Thursday following a road collision which resulted in a brick barn being seriously damaged and left in a dangerous condition.

There were fears the building could collapse into the main road and the area was closed off to pedestrians and motor traffic as a safety precaution.

But Police Constable Mike Jenkins, the officer overseeing the incident, said today: “Despite the road being closed off with various closure and diversion signs in place, some motorists are ignoring the signs and moving the barriers to drive through.

“As they do so, they drive right past the gable end of the damaged barn risking their own lives and potentially those of rescue services should it collapse”.

He said it was hoped contractors would begin work before Christmas to make the building safe but it could be several days before the road could be reopened.

“I urge motorists to act responsibly and to follow the diversions. It is an offence to move the signs and barriers and in doing so, they are putting themselves and others at risk.”
