Overnight work to take place at Malinslee roundabout

Malinslee roundabout at the entrance to Telford town centre is to close during weekday evenings for up to two weeks from today as work to make the town centre Box Road two way gathers pace.

Overnight work to take place at Malinslee roundabout

The work is taking place as part of the £450m redevelopment of Southwater and Telford Shopping Centre which requires changes to the road infrastructure. The changes will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists and to enable accesses for the new ASDA and the Southwater development.

Changing the current high speed one way Box Road to a modern two way thoroughfare to enhance the town centre feel is costing £11.8m, with £7.8m coming from the Department for Transport.

The latest phase of work will see Malinslee roundabout closed between 7pm and 6am, until Friday 17 January and from Monday 20 January until Wednesday January 22 at 6am. Access to premises served off Southwater Way will be maintained during this period.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Transport, said: “We would like to apologise again for any inconvenience and disruption that has been caused by the ongoing work.

“However, making the Box Road two way will have significant long term benefits for the town including creating a more traditional town centre feel with a greater choice of routes to all parts of the town centre and slow traffic down, making it safer for all road users.”

A diversion will be in place for the small number of bus services affected by the overnight closures.
