Head teachers in Shrewsbury are celebrating “a phenomenal achievement” after seeing their schools named among the most improved throughout the whole of England.

Two Shrewsbury schools among the most improved in UK

Sundorne School and Sports College was 36th in the nationwide table issued last week by the Department for Education following the 2013 GCSE results, while the Grange School also made it into the top 200.

Geoff Pettengell, chief executive of Shrewsbury Academies Trust which oversees both schools, said he was “absolutely delighted” with the results.

“This is a phenomenal achievement by both schools,” said Mr Pettengell.

“There are some 3,200 schools in the country and for both to improve so much as they have is astonishing really.

“I speak on behalf of the Shrewsbury Academies Trust when I say how proud I am of both Sundorne and the Grange.”

Alex Raeside and Rob Hatch – head teachers of Sundorne and the Grange respectively – were quick to praise the teams of staff which work across both schools.

“Sundorne’s been improving at a fantastic rate over the last few years so to see us do so well this year is incredible,” said Mr Raeside.

“There is a tremendously dedicated team of staff at Sundorne and this continued success is testament to their talent and hard work. The pupils also deserve enormous credit.”

Mr Hatch added: “We are over the moon here at the Grange.”

“Only two years ago the Grange was in special measures so it has come a long way in a short space of time.

“It is now up to us to ensure we continue this upward curve.

“While it is a deserved accolade for the teaching staff and the hard work they have put in, the most important thing is that the pupils are getting a good, sound education which will see them go on to achieve great things.”
