Flood defences were today put up in Coleham Head as the River Severn continues to rise in Shrewsbury.

More flood barriers go up as river levels rise in Shrewsbury

Apart from testing, it was the first time the barriers were being used since the flood defence scheme was put in place. Extra barriers were also being added to those installed in Frankwell.

Raven Meadows was closed to traffic this afternoon as water bubbled up from drains partially flooding the carriageway. The multi-story car park remains open and is accessible via Meadow Place.

Numerous businesses and properties along the riverside in Shrewsbury were pumping water from cellars.

Car parks closed in Shrewsbury include Frankwell Main, Frankwell Riverside and St Julians. Those working or visiting the town were being urged to use the Park & Ride services with town centre businesses fully open.

The River Severn is set to peak in Shrewsbury at around 4.5m this evening.

In Ironbridge The Wharfage remains closed to traffic with flood defences in place, a peak is expected in Ironbridge on Tuesday afternoon.

River levels also continue to rise in Bridgnorth.
