Police have appealed for witnesses after a fire at a Shrewsbury home which they believe was started deliberately.

Shrewsbury house fire thought to be arson

The fire service dealt with a small fire in a bedroom at the house in Riverdale Road, Shrewsbury shortly before 9pm on Friday.

The premises were empty at the time.

Police Constable Simon Lewis said today: “It appears the house was broken into and some papers set alight in an upstairs bedroom.

“Fortunately, the alarm was activated and the fire spotted. It was dealt with by the fire service and smoke damage confined to the one room.

“We are continuing to investigate the incident and seeking any information which might assist us. In particular, we would like to hear from anyone who spotted anyone acting suspiciously. It’s possible the offenders gained access to the property through the grounds of Wilfred Owen School.”
