Police hunt for man following attempted robbery in Whitchurch

A man entered the Apparel fashion shop in Green End at around 10.20am, threatened the shopkeeper with a knife and demanded money.

She ran out of the shop raising the alarm while the man fled the premises empty-handed.

As he ran off towards the back of Tesco’s, he was tackled by a member of the public who suffered a minor cut to his hand. He was treated at Whitchurch Hospital.

No-one else was hurt and nothing was stolen.

Police were on the scene within minutes with officers making safety checks on those caught up in the incident. An immediate search was launched, including use of the police helicopter.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “This was an attempted robbery by a man armed with a knife.

“We are appealing for witnesses who saw any part of the incident, or who spotted the man fleeing from the shop.

“A number of people who saw him running from the premises have already come forward but it’s important anyone else who saw anything or who has relevant information, gets in touch. They should contact Shrewsbury CID on 101.”

The suspect is described as white, aged about 35 to 50, balding and of medium build.

Information about his identity can also be given to the anonymous Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111, or via its website, www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
