Council offers flooding support for businesses and properties

Businesses and properties affected by the recent flooding are set to receive support from Telford & Wrekin Council.

Council offers flooding support for businesses and properties

The council is offering three months council tax or business rates relief to any home or business which has been flooded due to the recent adverse weather.

Any business or home which experienced flooding is eligible for the relief regardless of how long it was flooded for.

The relief available amounts to 100 per cent off three months worth of either business rates or council tax.

However, where a property has been affected by the floods but has not been flooded itself, financial support may still be available towards council tax or business rates.

Funding for this support is coming directly from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

An officer from Telford & Wrekin Council will be visiting every property which have so far been identified as suffering from flooding to provide advice and guidance on what help is available.

Currently the Council is aware of seven businesses and 30 homes where flooding was experienced.

Councillor Bill McClements, cabinet member for Finance and Enterprise, said: “Many businesses and properties within the Gorge have experienced weeks of disruption due to the persistent bad weather.

“The funding that is being provided by the DCLG will go some way towards financially supporting those businesses and homes which were flooded as a result, as well as potentially providing a little support to those who were not necessarily flooded but who suffered as a result of the flood water.

“As a local authority we supported those affected throughout the bad weather as much as possible and while there was some flooding, the flood defence barriers put in place by the Environment Agency helped to keep many more places dry.

“Now the flood waters have receded, our aim is to continue that support, and we are encouraging people to get down to Ironbridge for a spot of shopping or eating and show support for the local businesses who have unavoidably suffered financial loss.

“I would encourage any business or home which has been flooded, or experienced difficulty due to the flooding to get in touch and find out what help may be available.”
