Shrewsbury man fined for ripping Koran pages
A Shrewsbury man was today fined for ripping up pages from the Koran during a football match at Birmingham City in December.
Earlier this month, Mark Stephenson, aged 25, from Napoleon Drive, Bicton Heath, Shrewsbury was charged with causing racial or religiously aggravated harassment, alarm or distress.
The incident took place during the Birmingham City V Middlesbrough match at St Andrew’s on Saturday 7 December 2013.
The court heard a female fan handed out the pages from her handbag during the match. Mr Stephenson then proceeded to rip up the pages, and gestured with a lighter as if he were about to set them on fire.
He was fined £235 ordered to pay £105 costs and a £23 victim surcharge.
