A Shrewsbury secondary school, which has been identified as one of the region’s leading success stories, is looking to build on its progress by appointing new members to its board of governors.

Shrewsbury secondary school appoints new governors

The Grange, which is in Harlescott and is part of the Shrewsbury Academies Trust, was this month listed in the top 200 most improved secondary schools in the country by the Department for Education.

Former employment judge Don Thompson and Richard Bonella, who works with the Institute of Physics, have been invited to join the school’s governing body with the aim of helping the Grange continue its improvement into the future and maximise its potential.

The chair of the Grange governors is Councillor Alan Mosley who took on the role last year.

“I was delighted to become the chair of the governors, particularly at a time when the school was recording its best ever GCSE results,” said Councillor Mosley.

“We are now moving forward with the intention of the school being judged ‘outstanding’ during the next three years.

“We have a very able, enthusiastic and committed team of governors which is much enhanced by the inclusion of Don and Richard.”

Mr Thompson said he was delighted to be asked to join the Board of Governors at the Grange.

“It is a privilege to be involved at such an exciting time in the school’s history,” said Mr Thompson.

“School is such an important time in a young person’s life, that anything I can do to help enrich that experience I will find very rewarding.”

Mr Bonella said: “The pupils here are Shrewsbury’s future; it’s in all our interests that they should do well.

“I’ve been very impressed with what I've seen so far, and I hope to be able to contribute something to the school.”

Rob Hatch, head teacher of the Grange who is himself a governor, said he was extremely pleased that Mr Thompson and Mr Bonella had agreed to join the board.

“They bring with them fresh pairs of eyes and new ideas and they add to a dynamic and ambitious team,” said Mr Hatch.

“These are exciting times for the Grange and it is just fantastic that there is a common drive for the school to achieve great things in the future, which extends from the governors, through to the staff and pupils.”
