Ludlow street wins top garden award
A Ludlow street has been awarded two major national gardening awards.

Lower Broad Street has come top in the Royal Horticultural Society’s awards for the best street display of flowers and plants and the best community gardening activity.
Lower Broad Street received the RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood ‘ award for the most outstanding example of a street displaying flowers and plants in a way that enhances the neighbourhood. It gained the highest possible award: Level 5, Outstanding.
It was also awarded the 2013 RHS Heart of England in Bloom Certificate of Distinction, and receives commendation under the RHS Heart of England award scheme. The awards follow several years of Lower Broad Street consistently winning awards in the local ‘Ludlow in Bloom’ competitions.
Presenting the awards, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Stan Sedman said: “The planting in the street blends into a glorious display enhancing the entry to the town through the last surviving medieval gateway”.
During last spring and summer residents of Lower Broad Street planted pots, tubs and troughs with a variety of flowers, shrubs and edible plants, following the theme suggested by the RHS.
“It was gratifying to see a street coming together to present such a successful blend of flowers, shrubs and food plants”, Sedman commented. “It demonstrates a real community approach with good liaison between neighbours.” He emphasized that LBS and the Ludlow Junior School maintain outstanding planting displays which he hoped would generally ‘lift’ the standard of planting elsewhere in the town.
The Lower Broad Street gardeners are now looking forward to competing in the 2014 RHS Schemes. As 2014 is the Golden Anniversary of Britain in Bloom the theme of awards will be for ‘golden’ planting, with the emphasis on perennials and small shrubs to suit the setting.
