Shropshire schools affected by NUT strike action
A number of Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin schools are either closed or partially closed today as part of a day of strike action by the National Union of Teachers (NUT).
The NUT is taking action against “excessive workload and bureaucracy, performance related pay and unfair pension changes” affecting their members.
NUT general secretary Christine Blower said: “Strike action is always a last resort for teachers, and we deeply regret the fact that we have been put in this position. Teacher morale is at an all-time low. Teachers regularly work in excess of 60 hours a week, which is unacceptably high and unsustainable.
“The introduction of performance-related pay is a way of paying teachers less, not more.”
It is the first time in recent years that the NUT will not be joined in their strike action by fellow members of the NASUWT union.
The NASUWT will not take part this week after Mr Gove agreed to talks with the unions about his education reforms.
More than 10,000 state schools across England and Wales are affected by today’s as the NUT launch the first national strike in almost three years.
Over thirty are affected by strike action in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.
