Work begins to improve front of former Charlton Arms
Work has begun to reinvigorate the front elevation of the former Charlton Arms Hotel in Wellington.
Telford & Wrekin Council is undertaking the works in exchange for the use of an on site car park over the busy Christmas period to assist shoppers and traders.
The works – which included painting to improve the street scene – will be limited to the front elevation and will be undertaken by local contractors KRM Contracting Ltd.
Councillor Charles Smith, cabinet member for Housing, Development and Borough Towns, said: “The aim of these works is to further the regeneration of Wellington by improving the appearance of the listed building until the site is fully developed.
“We are aware that residents in Wellington have been concerned about the appearance of the building and these works will address that.
“The council recognises this site is important to the regeneration of Wellington and we are working with the owners of the site.”
In order to help make the project viable and to secure the future of the site, the council granted planning permission to convert the former hotel and the surrounding site into 37 apartments and four two-bedroomed terraced houses.
The council is currently working to help the building’s owner reach a stage where work on that development can begin.
