South Shropshire firefighters today warned householders not to put clothes or other combustible materials near to boilers after a fire broke out in a utility room at a rural home near Ludlow.

They also asked people to ensure they had a smoke alarm to give ample warning if fire breaks out.

Firefighters from Ludlow, Cleobury Mortimer and Tenbury Wells attended the scene at a detached house in the Greete hamlet, five miles from Ludlow, at 8.30am yesterday.

“The fire was caused by clothes being left too close to the boiler. But fortunately the alarm was raised when the occupier heard something unusual outside,” said John Taylor, Station Manager at Ludlow.

Crews used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to contain the fire and prevent the remaining property being affected.

“Our advice is not to store combustibles too near to boilers and heating appliances, ensure they are regularly serviced, and test your smoke alarm regularly.”

Householders can contact the Community Fire Safety department at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service on 01743 260260 for advice or a home fire safety check. Alternatively visit www.shropshirefire.gov.uk for more information on fire safety in the home.
