High pressure is being blamed for the poor quality of air - which has also led to the sky being hazy.
The smog is a combination of dust from the Sahara and local pollution.
Adults and children with lung problems, and adults with heart problems, are being advised to reduce strenuous physical exertion, particularly outdoors, and particularly if they experience symptoms.
People with asthma may find they need to use their reliever inhaler more often. Older people should also reduce physical exertion.
