Shrewsbury gas explosion site up for sale
The site of a gas explosion in Shrewsbury town centre on January 3, 2010 has gone on the market for development.

A property which stood on the site at the junction of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road was demolished after being virtually flattened in the explosion with the area cleared and boarded off since.
Despite there being no gas connection to the property, a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation reported in January, 2011 that the explosion at the site was caused by a fractured gas main located in a footway immediately in front of 1- 5 Bridge Street. Six people suffered major injury and a number of properties sustained significant damage.
The investigation found nobody was to blame as there was no evidence of any breach of safety legislation.
Shrewsbury agents Halls is looking after the sale, commercial manager James Evans said the site was attracting great interest because it’s suited to a wide range of uses, including a restaurant, offices, retail and residential, subject to planning consent from Shropshire Council.
“This is an exciting, high profile development opportunity situated in a prominent position within walking distance of the town centre, adjacent to the Welsh Bridge and the River Severn, with views of the recently erected Quantum Leap sculpture,” said Mr Evans.
