Police have taken action against motorists using a short cut illegally in Shrewsbury town centre.

Shrewsbury motorists fined for using illegal shortcut

More than 30 were stopped for driving along Princess Street to gain access onto Shoplatch.

The stretch of road is closed to traffic except for loading and unloading but the no-entry has been ignored by some motorists seeking a short cut through the town.

Police Constable Karena Evans, from the Shrewsbury Central Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “More than 30 motorists were caught taking this illegal short cut during a recent two-hour period.

“They have been reported for a traffic offence and may now face prosecution with the possibility of a fine and penalty points on their licence”.

She added: “Offenders are blatantly disregarding the regulations and thereby risking a collision with pedestrians. We have received a number of complaints and may well be carrying out further enforcements if the problem continues.”
