Work is continuing on the £11.8m improvements to the transport system in Telford town centre.

Work continues on Telford town centre highways improvements

The work is being carried out to enable the £450m redevelopment of Southwater and Telford Shopping Centre and includes making the Box Road two way in order to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists to the new Southwater development, the Shopping Centre and the recently opened ASDA superstore.

The first phase of the project to improve Malinslee Roundabout has been completed which involved improvements to pedestrian and cycle facilities as well as providing traffic signals on the roundabout to help manage anticipated traffic flows using the new developments in the town centre.

Work is currently progressing on Malinsgate on the new roundabout and central reservation, Woodhouse Central on the new footways, Forgegate in preparation for the new roundabout and St Quentins Gate on the new roundabout and access to the new Southwater multi-storey car park.

Over the next few weeks, to allow some of the road surfacing work to continue, night time road closures will be needed on Coach Central outside the new Southwater car park from Wednesday 30 April for three nights and the junction of Malinsgate, Woodhouse Central and Coach Central from Monday 12 May for five nights. Carrying out these works at night will cause minimum disruption to the public and clearly signed diversion routes will be put in place.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Transport, said: “Work is still progressing well and we are still expecting it to finish in spring next year.

“We would obviously like to apologise for any disruption and inconvenience that has been caused but making the Box Road two way will have significant long term benefits for the town.”
