Police make appeal following assault in Newport
Police are trying to trace a member of the public who came to the aid of a young man being assaulted in Newport’s High Street.

The incident happened between 2.30am and 3am yesterday when an 18-year-old was grabbed from behind, pulled to the ground and punched several times to the head.
The offender, who was with a larger group of men, fled when a passer-by intervened and assisted the injured man.
Police are now urging him to make contact and also appealing for other witnesses or information which may help the investigation.
The investigating officer, Police Constable Lee Thomas, said: “The 18-year-old was set upon in the lower part of Newport High Street, near the Buttercross and St Nicholas’ church.
“He suffered a bloodied nose and graze to the head and was treated by paramedics at the scene.”
PC Thomas added: “An unknown man wearing a red t-shirt intervened, causing the offender to run from the scene, and then assisted the victim before police and ambulance staff arrived.
“We are keen to identify and speak with this witness as he may be able to assist our inquiries. I would ask him to contact Wellington or Malinsgate police station on 101. The incident reference is 0095s180514.”
