Police are appealing for witnesses following a distraction burglary at the home of a 91-year-old woman in Hampton Close in Newport at around 11.30am on Wednesday 18 June.

Elderly woman has £3000 stolen during distraction burglary

The victim was returning home when a woman followed her into the address asking for change.

The woman left a short while later but following the incident, the victim then realised over £3,000 had been stolen from her handbag.

The offender is described as a woman in her 30s or 40s and of “plump” build, with olive skin, black hair tied back and spoke with a foreign accent. She was also wearing white clothing.

DC Terry Homer said: “This woman is believed to have been in the victim’s house for quite some time. The police arrived soon after the incident and there was no sign of the offender nearby. Due to this, we believe that there was possibly a car waiting for the offender. I would be interested to hear from anyone who saw a woman matching the description or anyone who saw a car that looked out of place.”

If you have any information, please call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident number 0215S of Wednesday 18 June.

Alternatively, you can share information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or by visiting their website www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
