Work on the demolition of the former Focus store in Telford town centre started today.

The demolition is part of the redevelopment of the site as the Southern Quarter, the first phase of the £200m masterplan of Telford Shopping Centre.

Sovereign Land, which is masterminding the five-year Telford Shopping Centre redevelopment strategy, is just putting the finishing touches to a planning application for the Southern Quarter development and hopes to be able to submit it to Telford & Wrekin Council in the next few weeks.

Designed by leading shopping centre architects Benoy, the Southern Quarter is set to be a modern feature building. Subject to planning consent being secured, it will house new restaurants and cafés with outside seating that will complement and extend the experience offered by the new leisure in the Southwater development as well as new retail.

Shrewsbury-based building company LG Blower and RVC Demolition from Church Stretton have been appointed to undertake the demolition contract. They took control of the site today. It is anticipated that the demolition will be completed in November 2014.

Commenting on the start of demolition, Sovereign Land Chairman Tim Binnington said "This is an important milestone for the redevelopment of Telford Shopping Centre. To date we have invested a huge amount of time and money in vitally important work of planning and preparation, but this marks the start of real physical change."
