Community urged to support today's Gower Street clean up

A Telford community is being invited to turn out in force today to help with the latest clean up of a disused building that is Grade II Listed.

The clean up of the former Gower Street youth centre will take place ahead of a public consultation to investigate possible future uses for the building.

The council-owned building needs considerable investment to bring it back into community use. In the meantime, regular clean ups are taking place to address any issues.

On Sunday 13 July, councillors including ward members Richard Overton and John Minor will be joined by members of the public including the Gower Heritage Group to tidy up the site between 10am and 12 noon

The consultation will seek to draw up a picture of people’s leisure activities and requirements, what facilities they use, what they feel is needed in St George’s and what they feel the former youth centre should be used for.

Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s deputy leader, said: “We hope that as many people as possible will turn out to help with the clean up so that any issues can be addressed and we can make the site as presentable as possible.

“This will act as a springboard for the consultation which will take place over the next few weeks and will give us clear guidance on the desires and expectations of the community for the building in the future.”

Councillor John Minor, ward member for St George’s, said: “The former youth centre is a well known local landmark and now it has achieved listed status, it requires a lot of focus from residents in St George’s.

“I therefore very much welcome the planned community clean up and so both Richard and I welcome the support of the Gower Heritage Group."
