Junior Street Champions from Old Park Primary School in Malinslee have carried out an audit of their local streets as part of the borough’s Pride In Your Community programme.

Junior Street Champions help improve Malinslee

A total of 90 children from year four took part in the event, which gave them an opportunity to get out of the classroom, explore their local environment and develop skills including literacy, numeracy, basic map reading and how to record and catalogue information.

The children logged issues including pot holes, litter and fly-tipping, overhanging shrubs, graffiti and damaged garden fencing. The council will use this information to undertake improvements and repairs. After their walk, the children created anti-littering messages for their local community and talked about what they would do to look after the area.

Ms Mandie Haywood, Headteacher at Old Park Primary School, said “It was great to work with Telford & Wrekin Council to help improve the environment in Malinslee.”

As part of the borough’s £13.6 m Pride In Your Community programme, there is also an opportunity for adults to get involved by signing up to become a Street Champion.

The Street Champions scheme aims to support and encourage residents to take a more active role in their community.

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and local councillor for Malinslee ward, said: “This is a great example of the community working with the council to make our borough an even better place to live and work in and I would urge more people to join us by signing up.”
