Firefighters tackle fire involving straw bales in Wrockwardine

Crews were called to the fire just off Wrockwardine Road in Wrockwardine at just after 6.30pm.

Four fire appliances were sent to the scene with approximately 750 bales of straw well alight covering an area of 100m x 10m.

Station Manager Adam Matthews said: "Upon arrival crews were faced with a large straw fire involving approximately 500 tons of baled straw. The straw was fully involved in fire so our crew’s main objective was to stop the fire spreading to surrounding fields and hedges.

"Two specialist off road vehicles were later mobilised to this incident. Crews will be in attendance for some significant time whilst the fire is allowed to burn in a controlled manner."

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has attended 26 incidents across the county involving fields of straw, tractor fires and barn fires in the last five weeks.

Anyone who witnessed how the fire started or has further information is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101.
