Around 8,000 people are expected to participate in four world record attempts at the Wrekin today, with the event beginning at 10am.

Record breakers head to the Wrekin for family fun

The attempts are being organised by the Hands Around The Wrekin group.

Those taking part will be hoping to set new Guinness World Records for the most number of selfies taken in one place, the largest Christmas cracker pulling chain, the most people wearing a paper hat and the largest collection of people doing the hokey cokey around the Wrekin.

At the moment the record for the largest cracker pulling chain stands at about 750 people, the record for the most people wearing a paper hat is about 3,500 people and the current record for the most number of people doing the hokey cokey is 7,384.

The record attempt for taking the most number of selfies has never been done before and is being put on in conjunction with The Georgia Williams Trust. One of the wishes on the Wellington teenager’s bucket list is to break a world record, which others are now trying to complete on her behalf.

It is hoped that once people start filing out of the record attempts they will enjoy the entertainment at the Buckatree Hall Hotel as well as that from community groups arranged by the HATW group in the field next to the hotel.

Any money raised from the event will be split between The Georgia Williams Trust, the Lingden Davies Cancer fund, Stay, Midlands Air Ambulance and The Clifton cinema in Wellington.

Dan Harris, a spokesman for the HATW group, said the family fun day organised by The Buckatree will compliment the event already being planned.

He said: “We are ecstatic that bosses at the Buckatree Hall Hotel have decided to host this event to coincide with ours.

“They have been phenomenal since the very beginning and we believe the family fun day is a magnificent example of how businesses around the town have embraced our vision of community cohesion.”

General Manager of the historic hotel, Wayne Jenson, said: “Following a meeting with the group back in May I learnt of their intentions to break a world record involving Christmas crackers and arranged 8,000 crackers totally free of charge courtesy of Bunzl catering supplies.

“Our hotel is based at the foot of the Wrekin so there is no better place for this celebration.”
