Severn Trent improves Condover sewerage system
Work by Severn Trent to improve the sewerage system in Condover near Shrewsbury is almost complete.

The sewage pumping station in the village has served the community well for years, but was approaching the end of its life.
Working together with contract partners, Amey and MMB, Severn Trent has invested £1.6m to upgrade the local sewage treatment works and build a brand new, bigger, modern sewage pumping station.
Programme engineer, Adam Walker, explains: “We know the pumping station in the village was getting old and even though it hasn’t caused any problems, we know how horrible it could be if things start to go wrong. That’s why the time is right to replace it now.
“The work in Condover has taken us a while to complete and we’d like to thank the local community for their understanding and patience during the work. We’ve been really encouraged by the support we received.”
The new pumping station will serve the community for many years to come. But like anything new, it’s important to look after it, as Adam explains:
“The new pumping station will be fantastic when it’s first put in place, but even new pipes and pumps can become blocked when customers put the wrong things down their toilets and sinks."
“Many people don’t realise the harmful effects of disposing of fats, oils and greases down their sinks and drains. Fats, oils and greases quickly solidify when they hit the cool walls of the sewer and they can stick to the side. Other debris is then trapped and it can cause a blockage. With no way through, the waste water backs up the system, coming out of the drains, sewers, and potentially into homes.
“In addition, only toilet paper should go down the loo and anything else, including face wipes, cotton buds, nappies and leftover food should be put straight in the bin. We’ve worked hard to install these new sewers, but we need the help of the community to keep them in good working order.”
