Key locations in Telford and Wrekin will be lit up purple today to mark the start of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

Telford landmarks lit purple for Pancreatic Cancer campaign

This is part of a national campaign which will see landmark buildings all over the country lit up including Blackpool Tower, Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower, Belfast City Hall, SEE Hydro in Glasgow and Steve Prescott Bridge in Hull.

In Telford and Wrekin, the new Southwater One development, Telford Ice Rink, the edge of Southwater Lake and the iconic Iron Bridge will both be illuminated to raise awareness of the terrible disease – which has the lowest survival rate of all 21 common cancers.

Pancreatic cancer is the fifth deadliest cancer in the UK and every day 24 people lose their battle with the disease. The majority of patients only survive three to six months after diagnosis.

Councillor Richard Overton, chairman of Telford & Wrekin’s Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “The campaign is being run nationally by the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action and is aimed at raising awareness of the disease and its symptoms so that more people are diagnosed early.

“We are delighted to support the campaign by organising for certain landmarks in the borough to be lit up purple on November 1.”
