Temporary changes to Telford town centre’s box road

Telford & Wrekin Council are introducing a range of temporary measures on Telford town centre’s box road to ease congestion during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Temporary changes to Telford town centre’s box road

Woodhouse Central and Lawn Central will be made temporarily two way from today for a seven week period. They will both revert to one way on 12 January to allow final works including tree planting to be completed before the final two way proposals are put in place in the Spring of next year.

By turning these two sections two way during the festive period, it will provide a route that bypasses Grange Central and Coach Central where work will continue and will help reduce delays caused by the works in these areas.

Temporary traffic lights will also be removed from the St Quentin Gate junction at the International Centre to allow free flow of traffic through the junction.

Telford & Wrekin Council will be providing additional traffic management personnel during busy periods to help direct traffic.

Work on Hollinsgate Roundabout will be suspended on 24 November, meaning the approach from Hollinswood Interchange (A442) and around the roundabout will be open to two lanes to cater for the increase in traffic. Work on the roundabout will resume on 5 January.

All town centre car parks will remain open during the work and the town centre including both Southwater and the Shopping Centre are very much open for business.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Transport, said: “I would like to thank everyone for their patience and co-operation while the work has been ongoing.

“We are making the Box Road two way to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists and to improve the access to new developments like the town centre ASDA and Southwater and also Telford Shopping Centre.

“However, we were aware that the ongoing works could cause problems in the build up to and during Christmas. A certain amount of disruption is unavoidable during major schemes of this nature but we are introducing these temporary changes to reduce congestion and enable better traffic flows at busy times.”
