On a cold, wet and windy Tuesday night approximately 50 townsfolk packed into the Committee Room at the Church Stretton Town Council meeting.

Library Support Group lobbies Church Stretton Town Council

Members of the group submitted questions to the Council concerning the proposal to relocate the town’s Library to the school site on Shrewsbury Road.

A spokesperson for the Church Stretton Library Support Group asked several detailed questions on behalf of those present and also the very many others unable to attend. A written response to the questions was requested from the Council.

Over the previous few days, a Library Support Group team had been out on the streets talking to hundreds of residents, many of whom were not aware of the threat to their Library. The public response to the Group has been unanimously in favour of keeping the Library within the town and rejecting Shropshire Council’s proposal to move it to the out of the town and relocate it at the school.

Commenting on the meeting last night and on the fast growing campaign to keep the library on its current site, Felicity Thomas, a spokesperson for the support group said:

“We are delighted with the overwhelming support we are getting to keep the library where it is. The vast majority of those we have spoken to in our leafleting around the town want to keep the library where it is and cannot understand why the Council would want to deprive us of such a wonderful, central community asset.”
