A man was flown to hospital this morning after being injured by a falling tree whilst walking on Haughmond Hill near Shrewsbury.

Falling tree injures man on Haughmond Hill near Shrewsbury

The incident happened around 10.20am when the tree fell and injured the man.

The tree is thought to have fallen after a fire was lit by campers in its hollow base.

The man suffered a broken collarbone and ribs as well as shock.

Barrie Mansfield from Shrewsbury was one of several that came across the incident whilst out mountain biking with friends.

Mr Mansfield said: "When we arrived at the scene we could see there was a man in his 60s suffering an injury and in shock. The man is very lucky as it could have been a lot more serious. It was a very large and heavy tree."

West Midlands Ambulance Service called for the assistance of the Midlands Air Ambulance due to the location of the incident.

Two fire appliances including the Pinzgauer, a six wheeled specialist off road fire fighting vehicle, were mobilised from Church Stretton and Shrewsbury to put out the fire.
