Further details revealed on north Shrewsbury schools merger

North Shrewsbury’s two secondary schools are set to merge next year under plans laid out by Shrewsbury Academies Trust.

Further details revealed on north Shrewsbury schools merger

The plan, which was first revealed last June, is to have one secondary school serving the north of the town replacing the current Sundorne School and Sports College and Grange School.

The split site school would commence 1 September 2016, with a new building housing all pupils to be built following the outcome of a current bid.

Until the completion of a new building, the school would operate across two sites with all year seven and eight pupils located at the current Grange site from September 2017. Years nine, ten and eleven would be located at the current Sundorne site.

The first year from September 2016 would be a transitional year for Shrewsbury Academy with some smaller year groups remaining in each school.

Both schools operate within Shrewsbury Academies Trust, and the trust’s principal, Geoff Pettengell, is spearheading the multi-million-pound project.

The suggested name of the school is Shrewsbury Academy.

A consultation on the plans began on Thursday 29 January 2015 involving Local Governing Bodies, staff, parents, students and the wider community. The consultation will continue for six weeks.

The Education Funding Agency will be asked for formal permission to undertake the merger at the end of the consultation.
