Nominations are being sought to celebrate those unsung heroes who have made an outstanding contribution to the town of Shrewsbury.

Mayor’s Awards will honour Shrewsbury's unsung heroes

The Mayor, Councillor Beverley Baker, is asking businesses, organisations and residents to make submissions for Shrewsbury’s annual civic awards, designed to highlight those who have gone above and beyond for the benefit of the town.

Nominations are invited in a range of categories, which will then be whittled down in true Oscar style to a shortlist, with the winners revealed on April 22 at the town’s Guildhall.

The categories are:

Built Heritage Award – acknowledges the achievements of individuals, organisations and companies that own buildings in Shrewsbury and have worked towards enhancing the built heritage.

There are two categories:

• Single dwellings, Conversions and Minor Works Category
• Commercial or Residential Developments and Major Schemes Category

Business Award – acknowledges the work of businesses, organisations and individuals who have contributed to the economy of the town, be it through providing job opportunities, business expansion or general promotion and marketing of the town.

There are four categories:
• Larger Employers (over 50 employees)
• Small Employers (under 50 employees)
• Not-for-Profit Organisations
• Young Entrepreneur

Community Award – acknowledges the work of community groups and individuals who have contributed to the social well-being of the town, from major community projects to someone who looks out for their neighbours.

There are three categories:
• Group Category
• Individual Category
• Volunteer Category

Environmental Award – acknowledges the work of organisations, community groups and individuals who have contributed to enhancing the environment, from major recycling initiatives to organising litter picking events.

There are two categories:
• Environmental Category
• Tidy Shrewsbury Category

Youth Award – acknowledges the work of schools, groups and individuals who have contributed to the well-being of young people within the town.

There are three categories:
• Schools Category
• Group Category
• Individual Category

Tourism Award – acknowledges businesses, individuals, groups and organisations who have contributed to tourism within the town.

• There is one category open to all entrants.

In addition to these six categories, which will be judged by a panel of members and officers of the Town Council, the Mayor will also present her special Commendation Awards. These are awards that are personal to the Mayor, presented to people she has met throughout the Mayoral Year that have played a key part in helping make Shrewsbury a special place to live and work.

Councillor Baker said: “Every year the Mayor's Awards recognise those who come from all areas of the town contributing in so many different ways. It's lovely to hear from anyone who believes someone deserves to be recognised in this way and we hope to have a variety of nominations for all categories.”

Nomination forms are available to download from the Town Council’s website at www.shrewsburytowncouncil.gov.uk or for a hard copy contact the Mayor's Secretary on 01743 257655 or email carol.pullen-stc@shropshire.gov.uk
