The final phase of works to the Box Road in Telford town centre is to begin today, ahead of their expected completion next month.

Final phase of Telford Box Road works begin

The works in Telford town centre are part of the £11.8m Box Road Regeneration project which includes work to convert the Box Road to two way traffic to improve access to the shopping centre and new developments, improve traffic flow and to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists as well.

Night time resurfacing works will begin at St Quentin Gate on Monday for three weeks.

To avoid disruption these works will be carried out overnight with a temporary road closure in place along St Quentin Gate between 7pm–6am, with an end date of Monday 9 March.

The surfacing works at St Quentins Gate will be immediately followed by three weeks of overnight resurfacing work at Hollinsgate.

The works are expected to be finished by the end of March and will mark the end of major works around the Box Road which began in September 2013.

After this the only remaining work will be bonding treatment to the central reserves around the Box Road but this cannot be started until warmer weather and will cause minimal disruption.

The Box Road is due to fully open to two-way traffic with the completion of this final stage of works, at the end of March.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member with responsibility for transport, said:

“I would like to thank everyone for their patience and co-operation and apologise for any inconvenience caused while the work on the Box Road is ongoing.

“I’m delighted that an end to the road works is now in sight and the new two way system in Telford town centre will transform the feel of the town centre help to offer an improved experience for car users, cyclists and pedestrians.”

It will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists and to improve the access to new developments like the town centre ASDA and Southwater and also Telford Shopping Centre and play an important part in changing the way that view and use the town centre.
