Hospital staff help couple celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary together
A couple who found themselves in the same hospital, but on different wards, were able to spend their 60th Wedding Anniversary together, thanks to the staff caring for them.

David and Olive Roberts celebrated the milestone on 26 March, but thought they would be spending the day apart as Mr Roberts is a patient on Ward 25G and Mrs Roberts is on Ward 24E at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH).
But when staff learned of the anniversary, they arranged for Mrs Roberts to join her husband and staff from the Catering Department arranged for them to have a special meal delivered which they enjoyed before spending the rest of the afternoon together surrounded by members of their family.
Alex Goucher, one of the Physiotherapists involved in arranging the celebration, said:
“When we discovered it was their wedding anniversary we decided it was important that they spent the day together. It was a real team effort—Catering brought lunches from the kitchen to 25G and we took Olive there so she and David could be together and staff brought cards in to sign and give to them.
“They spent the whole afternoon together, from midday until the end of visiting hours at 4pm.
“It was lovely to see and it all got quite emotional for the staff.”
Throughout the celebrations, members of the couple’s family came in to visit them.
Mr and Mrs Roberts, who received a card from the Queen to mark their long marriage, were married in Welshpool and honeymooned in Stockport.
The couple, formerly of Myddle, and who now live in Shrewsbury, have four children, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and have, according to Mr Roberts, had a long and happy marriage.
Mr Roberts was admitted to RSH at the end of February, and his wife was admitted a few days later.
