West Mercia Police are appealing for information after an attempted rape in Telford.

Police appeal following attempted rape in Telford

The incident happened on Good Friday at around 4pm on a footpath off Whitchurch Drive near to Furrows Garage.

The victim, a 21-year-old woman, was walking when she was approached behind by a man. He grabbed her around the neck and proceeded to drag her into some bushes.

At this point, a couple appeared further along the footpath heading in their direction. The offender then ran off.

He is described as white, around 5 foot 2, of an average build and spoke with a foreign accent.

Sergeant Jez Gardner, the investigating officer, said: "This is an incident which we are taking very seriously and believe the intention of the offender was to rape the victim.

"We are eager to speak to the couple, as they may have information to help us with our inquiries. I also urge anyone who saw a man of this description in the area at the time to get in contact with police."

Anyone with information is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident 572S of Saturday 11 April.

Alternatively, information can be given to the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org
