Stylish street lights unveiled at Shropshire village
Stylish street lights have been installed in a Shropshire village after a two year campaign by residents after it was feared that the “lights would go out” due to lack of funds.

A total of 12 Victorian style lanterns running through the village of New Works, near Little Wenlock, have replaced old and obsolete lighting.
In 2012 the majority of street lights in New Works had been condemned as they were too dangerous to repair and with limited funds, the parish council could not meet replacement costs.
The problem was discussed with a newly formed New Works Residents Committee and after extensive consultations with residents, it was decided to request funding from the UK Opencast Coal Committee responsible for giving money to worthy causes for those living near to the New Works opencast coal site operating at the time.
Resident Elaine Gandy, who made the successful application of £28,000 funding to the UK Coal Funding Committee, said she was very pleased that New Works residents could benefit from the stylish Victorian lantern street lights for many years to come.
Both energy and maintenance costs for the street lights had been considerably reduced with modern LED lighting, which would benefit all residents of the Little Wenlock parish, she added.
