This weekend's popular Shrewsbury Regatta on the River Severn has been cancelled due to the threat of rising river levels.

Shrewsbury Regatta cancelled as river levels are set to rise

Organisers made the decision following advice from the Met Office and  Environment Agency this morning.

Paul Simon, Regatta Secretary at Pengwern Boat Club said: "Although river levels are falling now they are predicted to rise dramatically from Saturday lunchtime after heavy rain today. The levels predicted would make it impossible for us to provide safe or fair racing."

The event is set to return next year with refunds being arranged for those who had paid to take part.
