Children’s artwork brings smile to community

Shropshire schoolchildren’s artwork is being featured on a mural at the site of a new £9 million development of apartments for the over 55s in Wellington.

Children’s artwork brings smile to community

75 four and five year olds from Short Wood Primary School’s reception class visited the site of Oakwood, Holyhead Road, for their project ‘The house that Jack built’ and on returning to school got busy painting and drawing what they had seen on the day. Their most eye catching art has now been recreated as a 14 metre mural on the site’s hoarding.

Oakwood is part of a programme of innovative extra care schemes being developed across Shropshire by The Wrekin Housing Trust and Choices Housing Association under their ShireLiving brand and is being built by Telford based construction firm McPhillips (Wellington) Limited.

The mural was officially unveiled today at a ceremony attended by the children and their teachers together with residents Harry, 80, and Leonora Beech, 83, who live at an existing Trust development in Telford.

Jane Doult from Short Wood Primary School said; “We’re thrilled with the finished mural and have already received lovely feedback from the local community who have told us it makes them smile. What a wonderful outcome.”

Assistant Project Manager from The Wrekin Housing Trust, Jane Kind said: “The mural is fantastic and the children have been very interested in how new homes are built. New homes for older people are much needed and we’re pleased to be investing in purpose built housing like Oakwood which provides integrated services for people as they age.”

McPhillips began work on the development in January 2015 and are on target for completion next year.

Mark Kiddie, of McPhillips said; “We want to thank the children from Short Wood Primary School for making their mark on what is a project for the whole community, young and old alike.”
