Driver dies in A49 collision south of Leebotwood

Emergency services were called to the scene at 7.45am near the turning for Botvyle.

A red Mitsubishi L200 Pickup truck was travelling northbound on the A49, when it was in a collision with a white Volvo heavy goods vehicle travelling southbound. The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 64 year old man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a pick up truck and a HGV that had been in a serious collision. Both vehicles had suffered significant damage.

“Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save the man driving the pick up truck, and sadly he was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The man driving the HGV was checked over at the scene by ambulance crews but was not injured.”

The A49 was closed between Dobbies island and Church Stretton until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to, or immediately prior to the collision, to tel 101 quoting incident number 0169S 250715
