Police have released the names of two motorcyclists who died following a collision on the A5 near Gailey on Wednesday.

Police name motorcyclists killed in A5 collision

The first, who was riding the red BMW, has been formally identified as Michael Nock, aged 44, from Speedwell Gardens, Featherstone.

The second, who was riding the blue and white Suzuki, has not been formally identified but is believed to be David Harvey Smith, aged 49, from St James Road, Cannock.

Mr Smith's family said: "Thank you to friends and family for their continued support at this difficult and stressful time following the sudden and tragic death of our beloved father, partner, grandfather and friend. We request that we be given time to grieve during this very difficult time. David will be missed dearly and words cannot describe our loss."

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10am on Wednesday following the head-on collision between the two motorcycles.

A stretch of the A5 was closed for several hours following the collision, to allow a detailed examination of the scene.

An investigation into the circumstances of exactly what happened is now underway and we are appealing for witnesses to the collision, and those who saw the manner of riding beforehand, to contact Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident 189 of July 29.
