The bid to find the perfect name for Shrewsbury's new £8m care home has been opened up for members of the community to share their inspired ideas.

Creative name sought for Shrewsbury’s new £8m care home

Construction is currently underway on the 90-room residential and nursing home on the site of the former Territorial Army centre on Sundorne Road by Shropshire's largest independent care provider, the not-for-profit Coverage Care Services.

The home is expected to be operational by the end of next year, employing around 130 people and creating new jobs.

Coverage Care is asking Shrewsbury citizens, school children and the residents of its other homes to come up with a suggestion for the new development, with the proposer of the successful idea invited to be a special guest at the official opening ceremony.

Coverage Care chief executive, David Coull, said: “As the former home of the Territorial Army, the site is packed with history which could give people some ideas for a name. It is also next to the Severn Meadows Health Village and the Shrewsbury Sports Village, alongside the area known locally as the Severn Pitches.

“People may choose to reflect another part of Shrewsbury’s history or perhaps even the town's future! We just want them to tell us briefly why they've come up with their particular suggestion.

“We are looking forward to hearing people’s ideas and we hope there are some inventive and interesting proposals.”

Kevin Pardy, the Shropshire and Shrewsbury Town Councillor for Sundorne, welcomed the opportunity for residents to get involved.

“This is a very exciting development for Sundorne and the wider community of Shrewsbury and will provide a high quality and much needed purpose built home that will become a landmark in north Shrewsbury.

“Until recently I had a close relative who resided at Crowmoor House and therefore have experienced the excellent care, support and friendliness that Coverage Care has to offer. The naming competition is a great chance to create part of Shrewsbury history.”

Suggestions can be emailed to media@coveragecareservices.co.uk with a name, address and contact telephone number and up to 25 words about the choice of name or by filling in a printed form available from Coverage Care's Shrewsbury care homes.
