Work is underway to develop 61 much needed affordable homes for the over 55s in Oswestry.

Affordable homes for the over 55s in Oswestry

The scheme at Alexandra Road will be a ShireLiving development, a partnership between The Wrekin Housing Trust and Choices Housing who are both not-for-profit organisations providing affordable homes and care services. They are working alongside Willmott Dixon and Shropshire Council to provide homes for rent to people from the local area and go some way to addressing the significant need for affordable, extra care accommodation in the Oswestry area and Shropshire in general.

With an on-site restaurant and landscaped gardens, the development at Alexandra Road, Oswestry will provide 53 extra care apartments and 8 bungalows for people over the age of 55.

Extra care accommodation allows older people to live independently for as long as possible in their own home, with the peace of mind and security of 24/7 onsite care and support. It was recognised that there was a definite need for this type of accommodation in the area, as identified following consultation with Shropshire Council.

The Trust agreed to amend the design somewhat to take into consideration views from local residents; the ground level of the site is being lowered during construction to lessen the overall height of the development.

This development will bring over £20 million into the local economy and create 145 jobs including nine apprentice positions. Once open the extra care scheme will create a further ten permanent jobs for local people.
