Drivers are being warned of continuing delays during emergency repair work on the M54 after cracks were discovered in the carriageway between junctions 3 and 2.

Drivers continue to face delays during M54 emergency repair work

Overnight last night Highways England closed the eastbound carriageway from junction 3 to 2 to investigate as well as undertaking temporary remedial works to the affected locations.

Highways England implimented a hard shoulder and lane closure through the affected area with lane 2 only open past the scene. This carriageway layout will remain in place until 8pm on Friday evening.

Drivers using the M54 tomorrow morning are warned to expect delays and are urged to leave extra time for their journeys.

Highways England and its contractors are working around the clock to carry out the repairs and fully reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

Weekend scheduled closures:
On Friday evening at 8pm the M54 will be fully closed junctions 3 to 2 to undertake phase 1 repairs. The work is hoped to be completed by about noon on Saturday – after which lane 2 only will again be opened to traffic.

On Saturday evening at 8pm the closure will be repeated to undertake phase 2 of the repairs. Subject to weather conditions this work is hoped to be completed by about noon on Sunday – after which the M54 will be fully opened, eastbound to traffic using both lanes.

The planned closures may be subject to change.

For diversion route from junction 3 drivers should follow the Solid Black Square Symbol.

All traffic is advised to leave the M54 eastbound at J3, taking the A41 northbound to the junction with the A5 near Burlington. Then taking the A5 eastbound to the Gailey roundabout where drivers can then take the A449 southbound to re-join the M54 at J2.

Drivers who arrive at the Gailey roundabout (A5/A449) junction intending to take the M6 northbound may continue eastbound on the A5 which will route to the M6 J12 near Cannock.

The diversion for tonight's eastbound closure is via the A41 northbound, the A5 eastbound towards Weston-under-Lizard, and the Stafford Road southbound towards the M54 to rejoin at junction 2.
