One lane is due to reopen on the eastbound M54 near Wolverhampton overnight in time for Monday morning’s commuter traffic.

One lane to reopen on M54 eastbound following works

The eastbound carriageway between junction 3 for Wolverhampton and Cosford and junction 2 for Stafford and i54 has been closed since 8pm on Friday while Highways England carried out inspections and repairs to concrete slabs on the road surface.

One lane will reopen by 6am tomorrow (Monday 7 December) but lane 1 and the hard shoulder will need to remain closed for safety reasons.

The eastbound carriage will also be closed overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for several nights next week while engineers continue to investigate the issue and carry out repairs.

The eastbound entry slip road at junction 3 will also be closed between 7am and 9am each morning until the work is completed to improve the flow of traffic past the lane closure.

Frank Bird, Emergency Planning Officer for the Midlands, said: “We’re sorry we’re not able to fully reopen the eastbound carriageway on Monday morning but we need to carry out further inspections.

“We also need to allow time for the new material we’ve laid to harden sufficiently before vehicles can travel over that section of road again.

“If you’re planning to use the M54 over the next few days then I’d encourage you to allow extra time for your journey, or to consider using an alternative route.”

The diversion for overnight eastbound closures is via the A41 northbound, the A5 eastbound towards Weston-under-Lizard, and Stafford Road southbound towards the M54 to re-join at junction 2.
