Oswestry man sentenced to 15 years for New Year's Day rape

Howard Long, 32 of Melverley near Oswestry, has today been sentenced to 15 years for the rape of a woman in Oswestry on New Year's Day 2015.
Long pleaded guilty to rape, attempted rape and two counts of sexual assault at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday 20th July and will serve 11 years, 8 months in prison and will be on extended license for an additional three years, four months. He will also remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Detective Chief Inspector Peter Davies, who led the investigation, said:
"This was a horrific attack; Howard Long targeted the victim as she made her way home after a night out in Oswestry with friends and proceeded to violently assault her.
"I would like to praise the courage of the victim in coming forward and reporting this attack, helping us to ensure the man responsible was brought to justice.
"I hope the sentence handed out today sends a strong message to the public that rape and sexual offences are taken extremely seriously by West Mercia Police.
"Rape and serious sexual offences are hugely under-reported and this is something we are working to change. This conviction highlights to anyone who has been a victim of rape or a sexual offence that we will take you seriously, treat you in a sensitive and caring manner and work hard to prosecute those responsible whilst also taking into account the wishes of the victim."
