Police are appealing for information following an assault in Wellington during the early hours of Christmas day.

Man suffers head injuries following assault on Christmas Day in Wellington

The incident happened on the pathway which runs through the churchyard between Church Street and King Street near All Saints Church.

Between 3am and 4am a group of men in their 20s were in Tender Fried Chicken on Church Street, Wellington. They had a verbal altercation with a group of three unknown men. They then made their way towards the churchyard, where they were again approached by the same three men. Both parties separated following another verbal argument.

The group then started to walk in the direction of King Street when the three men returned in the company of several others. A physical assault followed. One of the victims suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Another sustained facial injuries but did not require medical treatment.

Two of the suspects are believed to be white men, and the other an Asian man.

A 19 year-old man from Telford was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and is currently on bail until 21 January.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have any information, please call on the non-emergency 101 number quoting incident reference number 107s of Friday 25 December.

Alternatively, if you do not feel comfortable speaking directly to the police then you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
