Telford & Wrekin Council is set to upgrade footways on The Wharfage and Tontine Hill in Ironbridge following a series of public consultation events.

Damaged paving to be replaced in Ironbridge following consultation

There was overwhelming favour for replacing the existing damaged Yorkstone paving with clay blocks, as proposed in the consultation which took place before Christmas.

The council now plans to carry out the work to improve the footways by installing Baggeridge Chamfered Multi Brindled block.

The planned work is expected to start after the February half term and will happen either side of Easter with a two week gap for the holiday period. It is being paid for by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The council also consulted on planned traffic management during the work. As a result of the feedback received during the consultation from residents, businesses and road users, the council is now exploring a number of options.

A decision will be made once all tenders have been evaluated after the closing date of 29 January. Traffic management plans will be announced shortly afterwards and a start date will also be confirmed.

Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Communities, said:

“This is a major project for Ironbridge and very much something that the community in Ironbridge has told us that they want to see happen.

“People who gave their views during our consultation events before Christmas were overwhelmingly in favour of the clay blocks we have chosen to replace the existing Yorkstone paving.

“We have had plenty of comments on how to manage the traffic during the work so we are now looking at all the options before taking a final decision.

“I would like to apologise in advance for the disruption that the work will cause. We know there is no good time to do this as tourism and business in Ironbridge lasts all year round but hopefully we have chosen as good a time as possible to do it.”
