Two women have been treated for the effects of smoke inhalation and shock after a fire broke out at a home in the Sundorne area of Shrewsbury this morning.

The fire broke out in a mid terrace property in Albert Gardens at around 6.45am.

The fire had taken hold in the front of the property and caused a large amount of smoke logging in adjacent properties.

Around 20 people from nearby houses were evacuated due to the smoke logging.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “A woman estimated to be in her 60s was brought out of the mid-terraced property by firefighters. She was suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

“She was treated by ambulance staff at the scene before being taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further assessment.

“A number of residents were evacuated from neighbouring properties due to the risk of the fire spreading.

“A second woman from another home was also checked over by ambulance staff but she was discharged on scene.

“The paramedic officer remained on scene until firefighters had brought the blaze under control and ruled out any further outbreaks; he finally cleared at about 8.25am.”

Firefighters used breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and one covering jet to put the fire out.

Five fire appliances were mobilised from Baschurch, Prees and Shrewsbury. Operations, Safety and Principal officers were in attendance.

An ambulance was on scene within five minutes and was backed up by a paramedic area support officer shortly afterwards.

West Mercia Police also attended along with Western Power and Shropshire Council.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
