Shropshire residents take part in “Clean for the Queen”
Residents and organisations across Shropshire celebrated the Queen’s ninetieth birthday by helping to tidy up where they live at the weekend.

The national campaign aimed to get a million people out and about cleaning up their communities and is organised by Keep Britain Tidy, with the support of all the UK’s litter charities.
In the Shropshire Council area litter picks took place in Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Stanton Lacy, Ellesmere, Richard’s Castle, Myddle, Baschurch, Knockin, Maesbury, Ash and Quatt.
In Much Wenlock a team started from The Square and a troop of Girl Guides cleaned the town Art Trail.
Cllr David Turner said: "We found bottles, cans and wrappers in the hedges and on the verges as we walked around Wenlock. We even found an intact hen’s egg on the verge of Racecourse Lane..!
"An astonishing quantity of rubbish was found on the verge outside Shadwell Quarry on the A4169 and the clean-up exercise in this location had to be terminated when the collection bags became too heavy to carry safely. I have reported this to Shropshire Council’s Street Scene team for further attention.
"Thanks to the volunteers and to Much Wenlock Town Council who endorsed the exercise and provided insurance cover – “only for those under 80 years of age”! It was gratifying to be stopped in the street by local residents who appreciated the pride of place shown by volunteers. I still have a few official bags, together with my hi-viz vests and litter grabbers, if anyone wants to make another litter-picking foray locally at any time. Just let me know."
A number of litter picks and clean ups took place in Telford and Wrekin at Madebrook Pools Nature Reserve, Telford Town Park, Telford Forge Retail Park, Lightmoor Park and School, Legges Way in Madeley, Wellington Road and Dale Road in Coalbrookdale and the Silkin Way from Blists Hill Tunnel in Coalport. Residents also cleaned up areas of Ironbridge Way, Apley Woods, Newport and Wrockwardine Wood.
Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said:
“We are delighted to be supporting Clean for The Queen. Litter is a problem that councils across the UK spend the best part of £1billion clearing up every year. Clean For The Queen supports our efforts locally to make Telford and Wrekin look the best it possibly can, demonstrated by the creation of a number of parish environmental teams around the borough.”
